Initial Setup 5/18/14
After a botched first attempt with a strange acrylic tank and pea gravel, I've finally managed to get a tank worth posting here. :p The water is still somewhat cloudy from the substrate, and I'm keeping the level a bit low until my glass canopy arrives in the mail. I'm not sure how well the betta could jump if he tried, but I'd rather not find out.
I've done a fair bit of research by now but have yet to learn all of the aquarist lingo, so forgive me if anything is unclear.
Any and all tips/suggestions are welcome! I'm here to learn
-5.5 gal Marineland tank
-Eco Complete substrate
-Corner sponge filter
-Submerged heater (keeps the tank around 76-78 deg. F)
-13W 6500K spiral fluorescent bulb in a desk lamp (college budgetary constraints; I hope to get a strip light eventually)
-Flourish excel (once every day or so)
-Flourish comprehensive (once a week with water change)
Flora: (in order added)
-Unknown plant from Petco
Fauna: (in order added)
-Male half moon double tail betta
-1 eastern grass shrimp
-3 or 4 ghost shrimp
-1 cherry shrimp
Things I would like to change/add:
-Filter. I should be getting a different sponge filter in the mail soon, and might add a small internal power filter.
-Light. A carpet (maybe hairgrass) would be wonderful, so based on what I've heard I might go to a 24w bulb or higher. I'd like to avoid having to use CO2 beyond Excel, but I'm guessing I'll end up with a DIY setup eventually.
-Ditch the anacharis and fill in the back with something else. Suggestions?
-More RCS. I originally bought 3; 2 died off due to a relatively brief but apparently adequate period of neglect while moving home from college for the summer. After a few weeks, I may add a couple more RCS.
