20 gal rimless planted shrimp discus tank

20 gal rimless
aquaclear 50 hob filter
100 watts heater
black solid oak stand
Ebay Led light fixture

I started the tank in early November with 5 cardinal tetras and a month later I added 10 shrimps. Before anyone say the tank is too small for the discus this is just a temporary place for him. My friend shut down his tank so i took him in for now. He's very active and eats like crazy. He's been in there for over a month now and is very healthy and does not bother any of his tank mates.

as of now there are ....

1 discus
60 or more shrimps
10 cardinal tetras
5 pink zebra
3 cory cat
3 ottos

Thanks for looking.

i'm surprised the discus hasn't eaten all your shrimp,

when I introduced some discus to my planted tank, they ate all my cherry shrimp

I feed my discus frozen worms twice a day, even the shrimp eat it too. All of the worm would drop to the bottom and the discus would pick at it with the shrimp. Never see it chase any shrimps. I guess i feed him enough so he's not hungry to go after the shrimps. I had 10 shrimps to begin with and all of a sudden I see shrimplets everywhere. I counted maybe about 50 shrimplets so far. Only issue is my shrimp get startle and jump out of the tank. So far 10 dead shrimps from jumping out of the tank.

Thats a nice tank. Do you have plans for a bigger one down the road? That discus will soon outgrow that tank. I was helping a guy move a tank yesterday that had discus that were 15mo old and they were like 7-8"

I wanted to get a 60 gal but not sure if the wife is having it. Worst comes to worst I'll trade him in to the lfs.

Hopefully you'll be able to move the Pigeon blood discus soon as they thrive in groups of 5 or 6. Beautiful tank setup btw!

Its rather difficult to have a juvenile discus in a planted aquarium. They require very heavy feeding in order to grow to their full size within a reasonable amount of time. Bare bottom is the way to go when they are young and if you want a discus in a planted tank you should get an adult. But no adult should be in a 20. But best of luck given your circumstance.
