Its gonna be long!
So i decided to setup a planted bowl for my mom which i thought monitoring progress was a great idea since i didn't do it for my main tank. Firstly, here are the specs;
Substrate: ADA AS leftovers from my emersed setup
Plants: Japanese hairgrass, Crypts, xmass moss.
lighting: modded IKEA Lagra fitted with 15w 6400k cfl
I was a little skeptical about carpeting the hairgrass since i wont be adding co2 although i do have excel laying around. but yeah i really wanna try it!
Heres a pic of day 1 11/10/2013;
The next day, I did some googling and found that it would be painfully slow to carpet hairgrass without co2. Also, my main tank took more than 3 months to get a full carpet w co2 and high light. Above all of that, i dont even know whether the hairgrass would even survive in such condition..
So i decided to give dsm another try on this bowl. My first attempt at dsm failed miserably last year where most of the plants melted in 2 weeks. i suspect the heat was burning them. I do have 2 tanks outside my apartment where i throw all of my cuttings and it seems to grow fine without any special care. in fact at one point, it was jampacked with plants. with this giving me the confidence, i drained the bowl and started dsm.
i had since soaked up any visible puddle in the bowl with a kitchen towel, removed the saran wrap and then placed it in one of my emersed tank outside in fear of roasting the plants. i will take a shot tomorrow as it is too dark currently.
that's it for today..if you have comments,advice or anything be it positive or negative, feel free to post it here as i would love to hear it.
