Hi everyone I am new to the Planted Tank forums.
I live in Canada where a lot of supplies are limited or more expensive therefore I decided to do this tank after a trip to the states.
I will be trying some plants I have never used before therefore this tank is purely experimental.
I will be using primarily 2 plants used for foreground/midground applications:
1. Pogostemon Helferi
2. Staurogyne Repens
I used a standard size 10 gallon tank.
I place some filter floss under the tank to minimize vibrations and thus minimize noise.
For substrate I used Flora Max by CaribSea
I had the original FloraMax and the Midnight Black.
I was only going to use the midnight black for this tank but was afraid one bag would not be enough so I put some of the original substrate on the bottom first.
Here is what it looks like after adding the midnight black substrate.
It is a finer grain size than the original.
I split up the plants into small sized pieces in order to form a carpet.
This is the Pogostemon Helferi:
and the Staurogyne Repens:
Each specimen was planted fairly close together and hopefully a carpet will form after a while.
Pogostemon Helferi was planted in front of the Staurogyne Repens because it should be about an inch shorter when full grown.
The tank is murky after adding water but has already cleared up as of writing this.
I put in some Kyoto grass in the background but am not really commenting on it as it is not a fully aquatic plant.
I am assuming it will not survive more than a couple of months.
I am using a single T5HO Bulb at 24 watts and 6400K colour temperature.
A pennplax cascade 300 internal filter is used for filtration and a tetra 50 watt heater will be added soon.
I plan on dosing with Flourish comprehensive about once a week and API CO2 Booster every day.
I will add DIY CO2 if I am not happy with the CO2 booster.
