you could always put some moss on the spray bar. this will help it from looking so out of place.

otherwise, looks like you are off to a good start.
PH, KH, and GH are all a little high.

Just a quick update.

The frogbit is a little out of control and needs to be knocked back big time, but I'm dragging my feet because I like it so much. It's starting to block a lot of light from getting to the rest of the tank though, so I should probably get on with it. I took a photo of the mini x-mas moss while I was doing a water change the other day, I think it's filled in pretty nicely in the three weeks since I added it. I've got two berried lady shrimp, so I've got high hopes in that department!

I love my frog bit but I had the same problem! I took out about 2/3 knowing it would be back in no time

Hey thanks a lot! I'm pretty pleased with how it's coming along myself. I had to pull quite a bit of frogbit out, but I'm sure it'll be back in no time.

Loving ur tank... I'm doing something similar soon.... I used fissidens instead of regular moss.... Now I'm kinda wishing I went with mini Xmas moss. Haha

I really love the way fissidens look and I almost went that direct with this tank, but I'm really liking the mini xmas moss so far.

No reason not to do both!

November 27, 2013 update.

The mini xmas moss is filling out nicely and I have 6+ berried females. A few of the younger females dropped their eggs earlier this week. I'm not sure whether to be concerned about that or if it's to be expected. I think my parameters are pretty favorable and consistent, so I'll just wait and see what happens with all the berried females I have currently. To date I've not had any successful hatchings, but these cherries have been in this tank for barely a month, so we'll see the next month brings!

January 15, 2014 Update.

Upon returning from a month away from home I've found that: 1) my moss needs a trim, 2) I have 30-40 new shrimplets running around, 3) they destroyed their almond leaf, and 4) I have a bit of a hair algae issue.

I'm pretty excited by all the shrimplets. There is a good bit of variation in the size of the shrimplets, so I think that means that multiple females successfully hatched their eggs while I was gone. Is that a safe assumption?

While I was away, I was in an area where catappa trees were everywhere and I couldn't stop myself from collecting bags and bags of leaves. I'm glad my shrimp seem to enjoy the leaves, because I have a pile of them now.

Here's a few photos, thanks for looking!

2/18/14 Update

Things are going pretty well, everyone seems to be breeding pretty vigorously. I just had a little setback when I knocked one of the anubias off the driftwood while a was cleaning the glass, then when I drain the water down to glue it back on, the mini x-mas moss fell off the driftwood.

I'm having a lot of trouble getting this mini xmas moss to firmly attach to the wood. Is that common?

I've got two filters going because I'm trying to get my new AquaClear30 colonized so I can switch over to that instead of the Fluval 206 which I think is overkill. Thoughts?

I also tested my water for the first time in quite awhile, here's what I got:

pH = 7.6 - 7.8
Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 0
GH = 5 - 6
KH = 5 - 6
TDS = 170

This is pretty much exactly what it's been for months now, so I'm happy with how stable it seems. It's a 50/50 mix of RO water and my well water. Does this water seem "ideal" for RCS breeding? Also what other shrimp would be happy in this water?

Thanks for any comments, here's a photo.

Awesome tank!!!

I'm using the same light you are for my 10G tank, and I found that to avoid algae I had to cut the light back some because it was just a bit too much for no C02. I might suggest some window screen or better yet spacing it off the tank some if you are still having algae issues.

Beautiful moss! I hope mine grows out as nice.

4/10/14 Update

Hey thanks for all the compliments! I'm not doing anything special, this moss just WANTS to grow. Look at it now, this stuff needs a trimming bad! I got the hair algae under control, I reduced the photo period and did some spot treatments with H2O2, that seemed to do the trick.

Since my last post I've switched over to just the AquaClear 30 and sponge prefilter. Seems to be working well and the transition from the Fluval 206 was seemless.

I have to go away for work all summer so this is probably my last update until October. I'll do a trimming and draw up a feeding/water change schedule for my better half, we'll see how it goes. This tank is pretty low maintenance, so I have high hopes.

Have a great summer everyone!
