2G Pico Cube

I was inspired by Brian's 2.11-gal pico thread over on AA that I ordered the same tank. I have a meandering thread over on AA of this tank, and various detours.

Details
Aquarium: AquaTop 2.11G Pico Cube from TruAqua
Volume: 2.11 G
Dimensions: 8"x8"x8"
Substrate:
CaribeSea EcoComplete Planted CaribeSea EcoComplete Planted
Decoration: Seiryu stone
Light:
Dolphin 3W LED from Amazon Dolphin 3W LED from Amazon
Photo Period: 8 hours total (two 4-hour periods per day?) or as required
CO2: None, dosing Excel daily (2 drops)
Temperature: 77 F (or ambient So Cal)
Filter: Azoo Palm (Mignon 60)
Fertilization: PPS-Pro
Intended Livestock: Shrimp, for now H. Amandae & nerite snails

I had toyed around with a few different ideas but put the tank on hold to launch a new tank using most of the components of this one after I bought a bunch of Shrimp at a SCAPE meet in mid August 2013.

I'll start that thank journal soon...

Sick of looking at an empty tank, I threw this together in early September 2013 with stuff I had laying around

EC substrate and seiryu stone planted with HM and a dwarf amazon sword.

I was planning on a glosso carpet with B. Japonica, or Lilaeopsis novae-zelandiae, to accent the flats and perhaps some moss tied branches or rocks or something...

First I want to see if I can get the HM to grow under a single Dolphon LED fixture w Excel only (no CO2)

Sept 8th we planted 1 pot glosso and put a java moss disk in the tank along with some T. Amandae and started using this tank as a QT until our larger build is ready

I also threw a single stem of Ludwigia Repens x Arcuata

10 days after planting here is an update, looks like the glosso is growing up, not out

Day 16, looks like the glosso is dying off

Day 14, GSA takes hold and starts lining the tank walls so I picked up a pair of nerite snails

I also threw some Blyxa Japonica in there for grins and giggles

Day 30, well the nerite snails made short work of ALL the GSA on the tank walls in 2 DAYS and have moved inwards to the hardscape and plants

We also put a few stems of S. repens in and some floating rotala I got from a SCAPE member, the fish seem to like the cover the floating stems and leaves provide... no wonder.

Here is a shot before I trim the HM

And here is a post trim pic after replanting some of the HM I topped off

I'll keep this thread updated as I go, but would love to solicit opinions and advice from the more experienced community here!

So far so good... welcome to TPT! I love these AquaTop cubes! So the dolphin LED is probably good at low to low/med light I'm guessing (judging by the Glosso's vertical growth)? Are you still keeping those ember tetra in there?

It's good to hear that the nerite made short work of that GSA. I like nerites but I HATE their egg laying... they made my DW look like a sesame bun! Is yours laying eggs everywhere yet?

Yeah, how do you like the dolphin light? I'm thinking about getting one for a 1 gallon aquarium.

Rescape Update :: December 2013

We moved the 5 ember tetras that were in this tank into our 23G riparium and decided to do a minor remodel on this tank before we tear it down completely.

I pulled out a few plants and did a decent trim of the HM. I left the ludwigia as is and moved the blyxa. The blyxia seemed to do best overall though we had no problem growing HM under the 3W LED.

We recycled the scape and added a piece of cholla wood, some L. sessiliflora and a feed dish for a dime of CBS culls. This is just temporary until our new 5G is cycled and the CBS move over.

A few pics

I like the remodel a lot! Glad to see your thread since I'm kicking around ideas for my 4g aquatop cube now.

Thanks!

Check out this thread on SCAPE about the 4G species-specific shrimp tanks using a modified undergravel-HOB filter per Liam's thread here on TPT.
