The substrate is "Peace River Super Naturals Fine-Ground Aquarium Gravel" with some Laterite mixed in. I also use the Seachem Flourish tabs for added fertilization. Thanks for all the suggestions! I think I will mess around with the slate a bit. The cool thing about it is that its like Legos.. I can stack it any number of different ways when I do my maintenance so I can have slightly different variations every week.

Does anybody know what the proper way is to prune this Rotala? Do I just cut off each cute at the base when it reaches the water line? (probably a stupid question but I wasnt sure if there was a better way)

What do you guys think of this arrangement? I took some of your great suggestions and arranged the slate into two "peaks". Then I added a Java fern that I had in another tank to soften things up a bit.

Any more suggestions? Keep em coming!

It's a bit too symetrical for my taste. The arangement is beatiful as is your choice of plants.

Looking at it now: I'd try removing some slate from the left side of the pile to get a down slope from right to left. and move the java fern right or left a few inches on the pile.

Cut it half way up and replant the tops next to the bottoms. The tops will root and the bottoms will branch and send up more plants.

Aquascape? I'm a crypt farmer.

It's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore looking like an idiot.

That IS an aquascape, it's titled "The Vacant Lot".

Thanks for the suggestions!

Here is a picture of the lighting setup if anybody is interested. One of the lamp/reflector combos is removed currently because it was a little toooo bright. I might add a smaller 36w lamp in the future. We shall see.

Hi guys.

OK, so here is the final layout the way I like it. I made a little slope in the slate from left to right and moved the Java fern to the right a bit to make it not look as symmetrical. I think I am finally just about happy with it now.

Thanks to everybody for all the help and suggestions! I love this forum. As far as I am concerned itís the best place on the net for freshwater planted tank advice from nice people.

Cheers, Ryan[/img]
