Tattooedfools first dirted experience

So ive been reading alot about soil substrates, the benefits, the draw back and just the overall experience of them. So i said i figured with an empty tank laying around and a kidless saturday id throw one together.
10 gallon tank with painted back
hob filter, has been running on my heavily stocked 75 for a 3-4 weeks
standard 15w t8 10000k hood and bulb
1-1.5" miracle gro organic soil mixed with floramax ( hopefully prevent some compacting) and some special kitty thrown in there to hopefully bind the soil up for less mess when moving plants later on
1-1.5" pool filter sand

The substrate all together is around 2.75-3" varies a little from side to side.

plants so far:
vals
ludwigia repens
dwarf sag
blyxa
red tiger lotus
c. becketti from my emersed set up x3
anubias x 2, ones nana petite and the other im unsure.
java moss

Not sure what ill stock it with yet, really just an experiment to see how well things will grow. Water is pretty much crystal clear and im just gonna let it do its thing for awhile. I will proably add more plants and or rearrange some things

The white rock is simply to weigh done the wood attached to slate.

Good start! Interested to see if the floramax/litter additions have any measurable impact. I've found that once the roots take hold, moving becomes less of a mess...but that takes time, of course.

I used the special kitty in a couple of pots in my emersed set up and once it broke down some it was sort of like glue. I'm excited to see how things go/grow

Changed the light to a 6500, the 10000 looked to blue. Water is crystal clear. Did a little stem rearranging. Won't touch it again for awhile.....hopefully

That's a few of them In the back corner. I had them in a shallow substrate shrimp tank. So they didn't die but also didn't prosper to much. But the other ones in my 75 I had whacked down real low, they grow like crazy

Rescape, took the wood out to much for this tank. Added some plants from my emersed tank and have been doing water changes and stabbing the substrate, I have to say replanting and moving plants had no dirt kick up. Very nice

One month update

Little bit of algae on front glass, I believe its due to light from a window. The algae and sun rays arch up perfectly
Current stocking list
8- Pygmy Cory's
8- tiger endlerS.
Will be adding some cherry shrimp this week

Upgraded the lighting today to dual daylight cfls. Cut the photoperiod and raised the lights a couple if inches above the top.
Plants growing good with previous light so they should take off with this. The tiger endlerS are getting it on like they do so should have two sets if babies soon, the Pygmy cories are awesome. They each sleep on there own leaf like bunk beds. And the Cherry shrimp are doing there thing, no berries yet lots of saddles. Let's see how this batch goes as I've had issues with shrimp in the past.

Right on! I'm going to be starting my dirted 20 long pretty soon too. Did you set up a powerhead in yours?

It has a cannister on it, the upside down power head is whAt I'm using to inject co2 into the tank. I'll probally do an inline eventually but the line is fed right to the power head impeller and then bam micro bubbles
