55 Planted Community/Discus Nature Aquarium.

This is the journey of my 1st planted aquarium. I have had tanks for a long time, but have never planted them. I am a graphic designer so have a good sense of balance, color theory etc and was immediately hooked to aquascaping. Its nowhere near done, many changes to come. I also love to tinker with things so DIY will be a big part of my tanks. Subscribe if you like pictures!

Heres the tank now.. go through to see progression.

Pre-Planted, The day I decided to plant

The day I decided to plant - only had some giant rocks and black gravel... aka boring.

First live plants!

Late June/ EArly July'ish... An interesting day... kind of jumped into it, with not much prep or planning or any idea of aquascaping. As you can see, this didn't turn out well. I would soon realize.

July 16th - When I first noticed growth and got hooked.

This was the day I first noticed that my plants were growing, and I liked this whole planted tank thing. Also, my girlfriend got me an eheim filter for my birthday a few days after this, which helped me start thinking about equipment upgrades. (ie - co2, heater, inline reactor, drop checker were soon to come.)

Eheim here, got some seiryu stone, planted some grass. Would become basic hardscape that I would continue to work with and build on.

The day I added my co2 reactor, drop checker and first started EI dosing - the growth over the next month would become evidence of the importance of these if you want nice growth. I eventually switched to pressurized co2 but had diy co2 for 2 weeks or so after this.

8-15 - New Plants

Added some rotala indica and rotala rotundifolia, began to see noticable growth in the dwarf hairgrass from day to day.

Plants were doing amazing at this point, but started to see a little hair algae and what I thought to be staghorn. I think this is when I switched to a 5lb pressurized co2 tank with a milwaukee regulator, and added power head to increase flow.

One months growth in a pic

A testament to the importance of light, ei fertz and pressurized co2. I have 4x39w fishneedit t5ho (so they might not even be 39 watts since the ballast are cheap) and I have these 10"+ off the surface of my 55g over 3' from the substrate and still get PLENTY of growth, and even pearling. This picture proves it, and this a young tank and only a month. Picture has all the details of the tank, but ask if you have questions.

Still seeing daily growth, ordering some rotala sp green, mini butterfly, and a few other small things to add some bright green and red and get my stem plants filled in. Currently have increased fish load, have 15 harlequin rasboras, 1 leopard discus, 6 cardinal and neon tetra, 2 ottos, 1 CAE, 1.5 billion snails, 6 green diamond tetra, ~50+ cherry shrimp ~10 crystal red shrimp.

Man when that grass filled in and some of those plants got bushy it really turned out great. Looks better and better the more it fills.

Thanks for the advice, I've heard similar things. I'm going to pick up another one (red melon) on Tuesday.
