Looks great! Two questions - is the egg crate just for adding height to the aquascape elements or does it also serve another purpose? Also, if you're planting the tank, why are you also doing an ammonia cycle? Why not just start with a few of the fish you plan on having since the plants will counterbalance their waste?

Okay, that was three questions. lol

14g Tall: Planted, eco-complete, Red Cherry Shrimp

16g Aqueon Bowfront: Planted, eco-complete, 8 Ember tetras, 7 Green neon tetras, 6 Harlequin Rasboras

36 Aqueon Bowfront: Planted, sand, 10 Julii cories, 8 Zebra Danios, 7 Cherry Barbs, Asst snails & Ghost shrimp

Thanks!
The egg crate is just to help keep the substrate at the gradient I wanted. Once the plants take root it wont be as important but better be safer then sorry.

Before this I have only done one other tank and that was before knowing anything and it has been a headache! Lost a lot of fish etc etc so this tank is being done on the side of caution. It has still taken 4 days for the first dose of ammo to go from 4ppm back to 1ppm so I would prefer not add fish right now.

Tank is still a little cloudy but definitely clearing up. There is visible sign of new growth on all but the dwarf sag. I have been looking at other set ups an it seems to be 50/50 on whether people have power heads for extra circulation.

So in a 40b would you guys use a power head or not? are are the benefits?

Cycle question,
From early on I have been dosing 4ppm of ammo and it was taking several days to be processed backed to 1ppm, I have been seeing Nitrites for almost 2 weeks. Nitrates are staying low around the 5ppm but im guessing that is because it is a planted tank? Ho long should it take until Nitrites will convert back to 0?

Also Ammonia is going from 4ppm to under 1ppm in under 12 hours so should i does 4ppm every 12 hours?

Day 53 the plants are doing great but I have not completed cycling. I have not done a fish-less cycle before but this seems a little long to me.

Yes. It should not be taking that long. Keep ammonia and nitrite levels below 5ppm as any higher can slow bacteria grow. Have you been consistent with feeding the bacteria ammonia to feed on. What r ur most recent parameters. Ph/amm/nitrite/nitrate.

If in doubt, add more plants!

I change water weekly though im now on 2 weeks due to stuff. I keep dosing to 4ppm every day with ammonia. I was not watching PH too close as I was mainly focused on nitrites. I tested ph and its almost below 6.0. did i crash?

50% water change today. I will test everything tomorrow afternoon and see if the PH has raised.

I have a 40B dirted and capped with sand. I was cloudy for a week until I added some polyfill to my canister filter. There was a noticeable difference just a few hours later. Got a 16oz bag at Walmart for about $3.50...

ok used baking soda to bring KH up to 5 which brought my PH straight back up to 7.2. 4 days later my ammo dose goes down in 24 hours and my trites are at .25. I think im close.
