Fluval Flora Rescape - NOW WITH DSLR PIX - Updated 06/21/13

Well, the cloudiness in my water disappeared.

I removed the enormous sword from the rear of the tank. It was taking over and its root system was exposed, which may have explained some of the cloudiness. Some of the shoots had started dissolving into a milky white slime fest. I don't really know how to manage swords very well anyways so I pulled it.

Rescaped with a piece of driftwood I picked up from Nature Aquarium in Santa Monica. Planted some hairgrass, a new red plant for some different color and moved a few things around. Oh yeah, and added 6 new neons.

Check out before and after. iPhone pix for now, will break out the DSLR and shoot some real pix this week.

That a ghost shrimp? doesn't look clear like the last pic!

Very cool start. Is that a finnex fugeray 10" on there with the 13w cfl?
How are your co2 levels? what color does it show on the co2 indicator?

Looks like you'll need a good amount of co2 for that amount of lights.

Yeah, that's a ghost shrimp! He used to look like the other one and then he turned white for some reason. Seems to be fine otherwise.

The light is the Finnex Fugeray 12". I was hoping to just use the Fugeray, but it wasn't enough light for my taste so I added back the original fixture. There's a 13W 6500k light in the original clamp on light (which I modified to accept standard bulbs instead of Fluval's proprietary ones)

I don't have any way of measuring CO2 right now, but everything seems to be healthy. I dose Excel in conjunction with the CO2. I probably should get a drop checker!

Love the flow of the scape, it looks lovely! Can't wait to see it grown in fully.

does the co2 chamber (im assuming that came with the Fluva Flora Kit) work as good compared to hooking up the unit to a cermaic diffuser?

yeahh pick a drop checker up! You'll be guessing in the blue until you add on in!

The CO2 chamber that came with the unit is OK. You're supposed to fill it and let it dissolve (a matter of hours), refill, and repeat. Not a very good way to get CO2 to your plants especially if your tank isn't in front of you all day. Letting a constant flow of CO2 through it isn't really tenable because once you exceed the capacity of the chamber, excess CO2 escapes through the top in huge bubbles.

I replaced it with a ceramic diffuser, but the sealing on the ceramic disk was uneven so most of the CO2 would escape from 2 small spots on the disk. I don't think the DIY CO2 generates enough pressure to really maximize the effects of a glass diffuser. I can probably repair it and try again.

I have a Hagen Ladder doing CO2 duty now and it works really well. I hope to move it to a less conspicuous place once the tank fills in more!

Got a package in the mail from Ebi today. Got some Blyxa and Peacock moss (which you can't really see in the pic, but it's there...right side behind the Blyxa and another clump behind the hairgrass and under the wood on the right side).

Thanks Ebi!

Just an iPhone pic for now.

Nice outfit! Which Eheim is that you got on there? If you were to use the top glass would the hoses fit out the corner notches?
