mojos fist attempt at a planted tank. 20g

Okay, first off I'm am new to planted tanks. Had Reef tanks for years. I only have a small place for a tank. I am planning a20 g tank. 24in wide. So far I have purchased. .

Rena xp s filter
Inline heater
2x24 nova t5ho light
Eco complete substrate.
And a piece of drift wood.

Is there anything else I need to get started? Is everything here good or should I change anything before I start?

Thanks much.

Here is a pic of one of my old rimless reef tanks.

Just thought I would share. So you can see I have gotten my hands wet before. I do appreciate any input.
Thanks mojo

Nice clean looking reef.

Based on what you already purchased, I would recommend root tabs fertilizers depending on what kinds of plants you are deciding on ie. root or water column fertilization. This is due to eco-complete not containing any nutrients. I have eco-complete and it grew plants better when the tank was more mature.

Your lighting may be about medium light depending on how high you mount the light. Therefore you may need to consider adding CO2 of some sort either DIY yeast, pressurized or excel (liquid).

Fluval EDGE slightly modded, low tech
3+ gallon (40 x 16 x 20.5 cm) aquatic soil, low-tech

Thanks. Just got the stand ordered. So it looks like it will be next week before I get things going.

I will probably go with excel. My lfs had the flourish line and some beginner plants as well.

Thanks for the info. It's it just a carbon source? In the reef hobby we used vodka, sugar, and some others for carbon dosing to help the skimmers pull more from the water column. Just curious. Thanks again for the help. Things are coming together. I'll take some pics here as I get started.
I will also be getting a tunze ato (nano version) I'll have a little top off container in the stand. Pics will come.

Got the tank up and going. My light is too tall with the legs for my canopy. .. kind of a bummer. If I set the light down on the glad it get s too hot and hays up the tank. Well rather than mes around with fans I bought aled light. A finnex Ray 2. After some reading I hope it isn't too much for my 20tall . But it's slim and should do the trick. My water is still a little cloudy as well. Added some flourite substrate and even with rinsing well it still dirty. I cleaned out my little rena xp small. I found that I should have gotten bigger filet as I would like 2 baskets.

I have been looking at the fluval g3, eheim ultra 65, and the hydor pro 250 I think. Any help here would be great. I'll post some pics tonight.
Thanks in advance all.

Definately going to have to inject Co2. Here is my favorite recipe for DIY Co2.

I am a fan of the eheim filters. They are so quiet. Just got my second 1 off of Ebay new. Sometimes you can them cheaper on Ebay.

Mojo the skimmer god lol.... i made the switch from reef to planted awhile ago.. glad to see you trying the planted side of things. The sheer beauty of a well scaped planted tank can go up against some of the best sps tanks from some of the journals ive seen... once you get the balance of a planted tank down youll be upgrading your equipment lol kinda like you already did with the finnex ray.

I can send you some cuttings of begginer plants pm me if you interested ...

Ya that's me. Awesome . I'll try anything once. Lol. Too much money spent on skimmers for sure. I think I'm going to order the eheim 65g today and keep the rena xp s as a backup. .lol.

I used eco complete and didn't have enough so I used flourite on top. Not really digging it. Any suggestions?
