Getting dirty with a 55 Gallon. Junngle!

Hello everyone!
This is going to be my first tank I REALLY try to scape and make beautiful. I need everyone's help on this one! I am keeping it low tech, yes that means no CO2 high tech nerds. The tank sits right now with goldies in it. They are in for the winter, since i think it is mean to let them sit under ice lol. I know, I know they would be fine but thats not me. The tank is under 2 32W 6500k T8s, 5 inches above the water. If anyone thinks it should be lowered or raised to keep algae away, please say so. (I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS TANK!) Well anyways, I want to keep easy growers and still keep it LUSH. Im talking about pressing the fish against the glass lush in some places lol.
For the substrate im going 1/2 inch of kitty cat litter or less, 1/2 inch from the bottom of the compost bin, and an inch of MGOPM capped with 40 pounds of Eco-Complete mixed with blasting grit. With 5 API root tabs spread out.
I AM OPEN TO ALL SUGGESTIONS AND COMMENTS.
Here is my plan so far.

Yes, my handwriting is sexy.
Here is the tank now! Trust me the photos will be better once i get her dirty.

Oh and as for fauna
I was thinking:
10 Glass catfish(FOR SURE)
5 TRUE SA Bumblebee catfish(ALREADY HAVE)
10 Amanos(ALREADY HAVE)
And the rest is up to you guys. Yes, UP TO YOU!
But I want something with personality. So I will be picking somewhat but it had to be a suggestion from YOU GUYS. I love this forum and I want to involve you guys in this tank.
Oh and a special thanks to Crazydaz, he has inspired me to not just throw plants in a tank and be like BOOM, cross my fingers and hope it turns out pretty.

I like the idea! I would worry about the Amano Shrimp as the Bumblebees will eat things half there size. Mine ate tetras and shrimp. Good luck.

Haha too bad youre wrong ;P They are housed with neon tetras AND the 10 amano shrimp in a 10 gallon for about 5 months. Yah sounds mean i know, they have been awaiting spring forever so they can be placed in this 55.

Feeding frenzy video uploading.

Cool video, if you wanna see micro catfish.

Look at the goodies I bought today. Substrate, check!

Sorry for it being upside down lol. stupid smart phone.
Well anyways, does black diamond need to be rinsed?
Also, I think I may have gotten the wrong kitty litter. It is non-scented but it says clumping. Will i be okay?

Looks like you're off to a great start. Blasting grit will need to be rinsed. I just dump my substrate in a bucket about 1/2 full, take a hose with a nozzle on it and rinse till clear water comes out. IME the substrate will mostly stay in the bucket.

Can't answer on the kitty litter as I have not used it yet.

No, clay with clump when it gets wet. Don't worry about it.

I wish it would warm up outside enough to put the goldies outside in the pond. This wait is dreadful when you have everything you need, almost. Where are you spring..

MM never spread too well for me. I have a little bit of it in a 10g so I might give it another shot.
