My First Planted Tank (40B)

I started my tank the week before Christmas, getting back into the hobby after quite a few years. I picked up a 40 breeder and stand from Petco.

I ordered some driftwood from Dr Fosters and am happy with the pieces.
Plants:
Anubis Nana's
Java fern
Lace Java fern
Compacti Hygrophila
And a fake java fern on a rock that will be coming out soon

Fish:
7 Black Skirt Tertras
3 Green Cory Cats
2 Blue Rams
A few ghost shrimp

I'm on a tight budget so I'll be adding more plants in time. My lace java wasn't looking too well but I'm getting some new leaves now. The others seem to being doing ok. I'm hooked on the hobby and this forum so please feel free to give me any suggestions or advice. Thanks!
Steve

Good start! My only suggestion for now is to tie the anubias to the wood instead of buried in the sand.

I agree with CoffeLove. Also you said that you'll add more plants in time. Do you know what kind of plants you want to add?

110g Tropical Community & Sakura Shrimp
55g BN Breeding Grounds, Peacock Gudgeons, Panda, Pygmies, & Smudge Spot Cories, Rili Shrimp
10g RCS and show guppies

Thanks for that info. I've been reading a bit about different plants and how they need to be placed in the tank. I do have the rhizomes above the substrate and thought it would be ok. I'll get them up and tied in the next day or so. As for plants go, I'm open for anything that's good in low light, low tech. I'm using root tabs, no co2 and about 6-7 hrs of light each day.

Keeping the anubias in the sand is fine then if that's the way you prefer it.

I think ill tie them off like you suggested. I know they are slow growing, so anything to help them along plus from the little I've researched it seems highly recommended.

My First Planted Tank (40B)

I did some rearranging and my weekly water change tonight. Got the Anubias tied onto my wood and moved the smaller Hygrophila. Looks like I have lots of room for more plants now. Lol I've discovered the RAOK and the For Sale forums here so I'm in the process of updating my Paypal account

I've added lots of plants, mostly stems and everything is settling in. Added most of them about 12 days ago, did some rearranging today and had some root growth already. I can't wait until it starts to fill in more.

My First Planted Tank (40B)

Update: Plants are filling in nicely. My wisteria has really begun to get tall and bushy. I've added...rotala rotundifolia, colorata and bangledesh, some star grass, more Blyxa japonica and a couple more crypt wendtii green. Have a little bit of algae growing on the driftwood but it beginning to go away. I've added a coralife dual t5no 2x21 light because the spread on the double bright wasn't enough. I was having to move it from front to back every couple of hours because half the tank was dark. I'm dosing with Excel daily and Flourish comp weekly. I have a pressurized co2 system ordered and should be setup in a week or 2. I'm thinking (let me know if I'm wrong) that with the 2 lights, I now have med/high light so that's why I ordered the co2. Any comments, suggestions or critiques are welcome. Thanks

Tank looks good. You should get a BN pleco for that driftwood

My First Planted Tank (40B)

Thanks Conrad. I might just do that but alot of the algae has cleared up. I've got a few snails that hitchhiked in on some plants (thanks h4n!) and they've been busy eating it up.
Finally got the co2 together and working I got a Milwaukee MA957 regular, aquatek paintball adapter, 20oz pb tank and the aquatek 3 in 1 diffuser. It's working pretty well so far. I'll eventually get a 5lb tank but this works for now as Dicks sporting goods is 3 miles away. I know the tank is a mess but I planted heavy and now I'm seeing what's going to grow for me and what's not. Then i'll do some scaping.

I'll be starting a 40B pretty soon here as well!

How much did you spend on your CO2 setup if you don't mind me asking?
Looks like you're off to a good start.

I literally love my aquarium(s).

Re: My First Planted Tank (40B)

Another question if you don't mind. How do you like your capped flourite? Do you have issues with the flourite coming up from the sand?

Thanks...I've got about $150 in the setup. Everything from Amazon. Regulator $90, tank 20, adaptor 15, diffuser 15 and co2 tubing
