First pic ..i mineralized top soil (using the method posted by Aaron T) and put it into the tank after making it muddy. the next 2 pics are of the mud in the tank with the driftwood (glued onto acrylic which is laying under the dirt).

i put like a 2 pebble thick layer of gravel over the mud then 1-2 inches of sand over that ..those swords were from petsmart.

--i didnt have any clay to put into the MTS, so i used 3 tbsp of chelated iron ( i calculated that 3 tbsp would equal the amount of iron in 1 lb or clay (which is what was recommended for my size tank)

However ..i wasnt thinking that chelated iron is super soluable in water ...yeahhh..not a good idea..i filled it up about a week ago and the water was really yellow ..iv been doin w/c everyday and today it is noticably clearer.

so ...dont put chelated iron into the MTS lol ..i will get some clay balls and stick them under!

I may have gotten some pics mixed up ..if the water looks clearer in some of them ..those are the ones from yesterday or today. but you can see the yellowish tint it had before

FYI, you're going to be seeing those pebbles you placed under the sand in 6-12 months. smaller particles have a habit of finding their way past larger things, like those pebbles.

this is just a guess, but in the right corner of the tank, is that the bubble ladder used with the yeast co2 system? from petsmart? its basically a glorified DIY co2 system? i remember on my first planted tank i bought that.... if so im assuming with that size of tank and that lighting fixture it wasnt close to enough co2 and it caused problems..... is that why you tore it down?

im about to setup a 55g medium lighted tank, housing thicker larger swords but thats mainly it since it will be used for juvie frontosas

your new setup seems to be coming along

i tore it down cuz i had to leave the country for a few months. i didnt get the bubble ladder from petsmart..i was from someone on this forum ..it worked fine and was attached to a diffuser..which got cracked. it wasnt diy co2, i had a 10 or 15 ..i think it was 10lb cylinder, reg, solenoid etc. in the end i stuck the outlet into the intake for a powerhead to let the impeller chop the bubbles up.

it worked awesome and the plants grew like crazy ..i remember the red cabomba was growing over an inch per day...had crazy high lights too.
Man i loved that tank!!

I've see tanks that are 15 years old with a perfect substrate using MTS, but the Swords will be the killer if they get removed.

I like it, it looks good and your creative with making what you don't have. BTW comming to the meetings are also free you just have to be a member to play in the auction.
