Here's what I did for my BASIC sponge filter shrimp tank:
I used 100% Akadama in a 20L tank. 2" thick.
Used straight tap water let it cycle with the sponge filters for about 2 weeks. Change out the water 90% and use RO water to replace. Toss in a few fish or snails to help with the live bacteria (these can be taken out prior to adding shrimp). Now let is cycle for another 2 weeks. Do a 50% WC after the 4th week, Mosura Mineral Plus (what I use), and bring TDS up to 150-160. Test PH, GH, KH, ammonia, and nitrates. Using RO, your readings should now read:
PH - 6.5-7
nitrates 0-5 (toss in lots of moss or frogbit to keep it as close to zero as possible or you can use Purigen in a fine mesh bag to help absorption)
If all readings are good, you can toss in a few test subjects and leave them in for a couple days. If they live, your good to go!
Very nice. How come you don't cut the mesh smaller to make it fit in your tank like a carpet?
And hows your 12 gallon long going? Any updates yet? Did you get rid of the BGA?
Oh my, Thank you thank you for reminding me about my 12 gallon! Yes indeed BGA is gone!! wooo yaaay. I will post updates/ daily dose erythromycin, water change, etc. in about 3 hours when the light turns on
And yeah, I'm planning to cut into 10" x 12", if you notice there is a 2" x 12" of "empty" space on the mesh. I just need to get the tool to cut it, right now it's just temporary
I use 50:50 RO/tap water. I'm just wondering why is the PH so high? I was hoping for a six. Maybe I should do big water change and fill it up with 100% RO water? to make KH 0?
As you can see I added the more Akadama (the whole bag now from the 1st post). I added more Akadama because I tested PH was 7.6+ when I did water test at the first time. Now assuming more substrate equals lower PH... guess not :/
Awesome, awesome. Congrats on your substrates. I am curious what's the expensive shrimps are.
Probably would be golden bees/ snow white. I'm still trying to figure out if they are the same or different. Some pioneers on this forum stated golden bees came from CRS, while snow white came from CBS. If you think about it, the theory make sense.
So yeahh... I have about 8 "Golden" bees from a lfs from the tank above.
Man I haven't update this thing.... well pretty much nothing happened. I moved back all the goldens to the top tank long ago. Due to the summer heat I don't know if I still want to run this tank. I only have 1 fan to keep the top tank cool, and this tank goes up to 82F today.
