Plants in a ball Pimp club

Hello there!

I just got my first wabi-kusa set-up. I would like to do more, and its a really cool way to grow emersed plants as a decorative house plant.

I guess an easy way to describe wabi-kusa is like bonsai, but with aquarium plants.

Anyways, post your set-ups here, discuss wabi-kusa, and most importantly, become a pimp for wabi-kusa

Should this go in tank journals since I plan to be updating mine, and hopefully others will do the same, or should it go in the 'plant' section?

That's not a Wabi Kusa. Wabi Kusa is the ADA brand name for a ball of sphagnum wrapped around some stones, which plants are grown in. The whole "emersed plants in a paludarium vase" is purely a US corruption of the concept.

侘び草 google image search.

The only actual "Wabi Kusa Pimp" on the forum would be Frank with ADG, since he and Jeff Senske are afaik the only people in the US with legit ADA Wabi Kusa since he hasn't smuggled me one in yet.

Wabi Kusa is just an Aquascape Katamari

Emeresed vases are awesome, I have one myself on a manzanita burl, but it's not a wabi kusa.

^ I am curious as well... alot of the pics in the link look just like the two 'faux' wabi kusa shown here.

Also, if a real wabi kusa is just sphagnum wrapped around rocks with plants growing in it, what makes it a legit ADA wabi kusa?

Is it just that it is sold by ADA, so it is a proprietary thing? Like calling all tissues kleenex?

Yes.

It's like calling any 60cm tank a "60-P", which is the ADA brand name. Though this is much more apples and oranges, because these kinds of emersed bowls have basically nothing to do with actual ADA wabi-kusa. The faux wabi kusa I posted is just that, a false/fake/copycat plant ball that I made to mimic the original ADA version.

I guess I would say that as words are borrowed, adapted etc, why can't we borrow the Wabi-Kusa, just the way Magic-Maker is a felt tip pen and Kleenex is actually a tissue
just my 1/2 cents

Because these emersed vases have nothing to do with actual wabi kusa, as I already explained above. "Wabi Kusa" is slapped on as a moniker to everything from paludariums to some dirt in a dish, either out of ignorance of the actual product, or because it's ~Japanese~ and that makes it cool. 90% of the information in the US hobby about wabi kusa is wrong interpretations of third hand knowledge that was basically made up on the spot.

those look awesome.

so the meaning of the word has changed. that happens often, particularly when adapted into a different language.
"gay" meant happy once...

I still use it gay in place of happy.
I'm determined not to let the English language die.

Everyone should speak with purple prose.
Not really... That would be annoying.

On a side note. If not Wabi Kusa we should give its its own cool American name. Make it huge and smile when we see it used across the nation and possibly the world one day.
I really want to set up one of these. Cheap fun cool project.
I can't seem to find the right materials though. Nothing is really jumping out at me.
