Just had an idea, a tank like this would be perfect for a time lasp. One week of growth in a single video fast forwarded to like a total of one week. You'd see some insane growth. Who says watching plants grow isn't fun?

3 days under halide. 8 hrs/day. co2 is wide the open.

I built a hood and suspension board for the lights... just need some crown and black paint... works good. lights are about 9" off the water and the hood is keeping a 84* ambient temp. 80* measured 1" into the water column... so the heater is set for 76

I'm going to scrap some old PC cooling fans in there... heat is the main concern.

as long as you fertilize more than would "feel" natural and keep an I on plant mass vs. overall nutrient mass you can funnel a solar flare into your tank. they (the plants) grow extremely fast. nitrogen and phosphorus are extremely important. so are carbons, but they never exceed 40 mg/L. I feel as long as the plants are growing as fast as they are, they will out feed everything else.

I'll probably put the t5's back over it... the sun in the bedroom thing is kind of a drag. I'm put these over the 125... and the t5's over a 33 long and carpet that

I'll upload some pics of my handy work

Update.

two days later...

EVERYTHING is going nuts inside this tank... everything has got into a good flow an it works.

I don't care what people say about ultra high light tanks... they work, they are stable and they are gorgeous.

Here is how the hood got built:

...then I paint it BLACK... going to paint the inside WHITE so it REFLECTS....

total cost for hood: $30

That is some amazing growth you've got there. Have you noticed any algae at all ?

Which brand of metal halides are you using ? (It looks like a fishneedit fixture) and what is the K rating on the bulbs ?

yup fishneedit 250w fixtures with their 8K bulbs.

had a little cyano at first. Started dosing more kno3 and it solved the problem.

as of today there is no algae in the tank.

the growth is pure insanity... I'm going to let it fill in well before I trim it back.

the tiger lotus has to go.. it has 4x it's size in 2 days...

thanks!

left the lights off all day... I've noticed this tank will run great with two different light schedules. Either leave it on for 8 hours and then off for 24 and the last day of micro's or you can burn the halides for 3.30' a day 7 days a week.

its actually running cheaper (kW for kW) than running the t5's 12 hours/day.

I don't know.. I think super high light is pretty easy and fun.

I can't wait to see how advanced the LED technology is going to get (and hopefully UNDERinflated..)

any specifics about how this setup let me know

a few shots since yesterday with the ol' kodak....

this c. carolina appears to have ingested some lean..

insane tiger lotus thinks its a Lilly pad. going to the outskirts of town.

tank needs a trim... been 2 weeks without a water change ha... seeing how long before it NEEDS it..

Alright its been 2 weeks since the last water change....

this ultra high light thing is putting up a new perspective in front of me.

here are some shots I took once the halides warmed up and the co2 leveled off this morning...

LOTS of evaporation. Doing a w/c in a few hours so don't mind it. Nitrates are ~2.5-5mg/L.... tank eats everything

Still on basically a doubled up EI Dosing schedule!!! WTF!?!?!?!

Can anyone out there actually explain why this is stable and working? I'm an amateur Biologist (Although my major is in Agribusiness).
