I had a few questions on what I used for the LED fixture, so I thought I'd include that here.
I got the parts from www.reefledlights.com
. They have a pretty good DIY materials on their website. I was also considering www.rapidled.com
, but they did not have a solderless option at the time, but they do now, so I would consider them as well.
The JBJ solderless connectors worked pretty nicely...they were very easy to install. You just have to drill 2 holes in the heat sink.
Here are the parts I ordered from them...
8 Cree XP-G R5 LEDs
8 JBJ Solderless LED Connector with two #4 Self Tapping Machine Screws
8 BJB Optics Holder
8 Carclo Optics
1 LPC-35-700 48V 700mA Constant Current Driver
1 Arctic Silver The... 3.5 gram syringe
I already had some wire that I used and I got the aluminum I-Beam off of [Ebay Link Removed]
The amount of light for the 12G Long tank seems to be pretty good. I don't have any basis for comparison though. The other aquariums I've had in the past were quite a while ago and were T12 flourescent. Everything seems to be growing pretty well. I lost the Downoi that I tried, but I added that pretty early in my cycle, so that may have been the issue.
8 lights seems to be about right for this tank. There is no spotlighting at all.
I was debating about getting the dimmable vs the constant current driver and decided with the constant current. I think that is fine...I probably would have run it at full power even with a dimmer. I can raise/lower the fixture to increase or decrease the intensity.
