Zain(ey)'s Brainy 40 Breeder DSM updated 2-22-12

Zain Here,
After success with my 45 Gallon tank I've decided to down grade to something with a bigger dept. So during Petco's famous $1/gallon sale I picked up a 40 breeder. Most of the equipment from my other tank is going to be used here.
so far that includes:

-2X39W Odyssea T5HO light. I'm thinking about going with their 3 bulbs version with the timer so I can simulate an afternoon burst.
- SunSun canister filter
-Paintball CO2

I think I'm gonna go ahead and buy some Eco complete while petco still has their sale going. Do you guys think 2 20lbs bags will be enough or should I get 3?

My formula is 1 pound gravel per gallon. So im sure 2x 20lb eco complete is good for 40gallon.

Just finished putting together my main mazanita wood. It consists of three separate sections all tied together with fishing line. Now I cant decide on how I want to place it between these two.

A.

B.

Any Suggestions?

So I finally got a lot on the tank done yesterday. I got 20lb CO2 tank filled, painted the back of the tank, and got my substrate in. not just waiting on plants to arrive.

My Make shift paint room:

Krylon Fusion spray paint is amazing at adhering to anything.

3 bags of Eco-Complete seem to be enough as of now but, i might need another in the future.

And now my current scape:

There's still some room for improvement once i get all of my plants.

also a strange thing has happened. my drop checker which was dark blue has turned to a dark green with out any CO2 being added to the water. any idea why?

**UPDATE**

First time doing a DSM. I need all the help i can get.

So this coming weekend the remainder of my fish will be picked up and my tank will be fish less. this will be the perfect time to try a DSM and get a nice carpet going. since i have classes and work all day everyday, the weks should go by fairly quickly. I know my crypts and subwassertang can we grown emmersed, but what about Rotala Macrandra?

How long did you wait before you added livestock? I recently setup some 2 10gallon tanks and the eco complete is leeching Nirates. Have you had any problems with this?

I actually didn't wait at all. I used a mature filter and water. I know the parameters were good because the fish tried breeding many times.

OK that makes sense. Also, fish are way more hardier than shrimps. Ill play it safe and wait a few more days.

So I'm getting ready to empty out the tank and get ready to dry start, but I'm confused on what to do with my canister filter. There's a lot of bacteria growth in it that I would hate to lose. Should I just keep it full of water and set it aside or have it run on a 5G bucket?

I'm afraid the bacteria is mostly a lost cause. Two problems with just letting it sit full of water; 1) They need oxygen 2)they need food(fish waste). Since a static canister filter has neither they will just die out. I suppose there might be some dormant state that will allow the filter to restart quicker than a new one, but I don't know about that. The only real option is to stick it on another tank(even a friends) to keep it actually running.
