Laura's 38 Gallon Journal

So I have been trying to get the stuff together for this tank for almost a year now. I have the following equipment:

SunSun HW-302 canister filter
Odessa 30" 96w light with 4 6500k bulbs
Paintball CO2 regulator from JaggedFury here.

Then earlier this week, I noticed a craigslist ad for a 29 gallon tank with stand for $60. I went and picked it up.

When i got there, I realized it really needed a good cleaning

And the guy said something about it being a "special size" of 29 gallon. said it was 31" not 30" like the standard 29. So when we got home, I decided to measure it. Its not a 29g at all.... after some research, I realize its a 38 gallon.

Anyways, here it is all cleaned up.

I don't know if I like it in front of that window, but its right next to my chair, so I have the best view in the house.

I'm planning on using Black Diamond for the substrate. Adding CO2 via a DIY Inline reactor, PPS Pro ferts via DIY auto doser. Also looking to use a Hydor Inline heater.

I ran GH & KH tests on my tap water last night. Have 15 degrees KH and 17 degrees GH... is this too hard for plants in general? If so, what should I do to soften it?

RO or RODI water would be good to soften your water.

Sounds like a great plan.

Sorry, but what is RODI?

Ill probably have to buy water from the lfs or bottled water initially. Those rodi units seem really expensive.

I don't have a problem growing plants in my hard well water. I would start off with the water that you have, and see how things go.

You could try some Seachem Purigen in your filter too. Or carbon.

isnt purigen and carbon more for ammonia and nitrates rather than mineral removal?

Yes, it is. But it will also help soften the water. One of the chaimbers in a RO/DI unit is a carbon filter. Peat put in pantyhose in your filter will help too.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I'm so confused when it comes to all of this water filtration stuff... I have heard of peat in the filter, but wasn't sure if it would help enough to bother with it.

got the Black Diamond put in today. REALLY pretty! I'm picking up my co2 tank and hopefully the supplies for my reactor. After that, I think I should be ready to start looking at some plants!

A quick pic of how the tank looks right now. I'm going to try to take pictures of each step as I go along, if something goes wrong, it might nelp me to see what I did wrong.

Put water in the tank today. I'm rather impressed with how clear the water is with the black diamond substrate.

Got my reactor put together and hooked up to the filter. Filter is hooked up but not running yet. I still need to pick up filter media.

Gonna get my co2 tank filled tomorrow and hopefully pick up a check valve too. I'll post pics of everything once I get them uploaded.

Went shopping for those plastic sponge things last night for my filter and couldn't find them anywhere. Looked at Dollar Tree, WalMart and Kroger.

Would using Lava Rock make my water harder than it already is?
