Jim's 90 Gallon Planted

This is a bottom drilled, rimless 90g 24" high with 3/4" StarPhire. It's my first tank in 10 years so I'm learning a lot. Most of my posts will be summaries of my blog www.jtmiller.com/wordpress

Lastest posts are about flow tests I've done on the plumbing driven by an Eheim 2078. I might need to add more flow somehow either in a parallel circuit via another pump or perhaps a Koralia.

The equipment so far is a Eheim 2078 followed by a 2" RG reactor and a Hydor ETH300. The back is covered with black sign vinyl.

The stand is 2" welded steel and will be eventually covered with a four sided magnetically attached cherry surround. Google Sketchup of the design at http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehou...5eed2f86cabe38

Substrate to be MTS with Flourite Black Sand cap.

CO2 provided via 20lb tank, dual stage regulator, solenoid, needle valve and check valve.

Light is a T5HO four bulb 6500K fixture from Catalina. Only the two bulbs outermost expected to be used. Other bulbs will likely be NO used for post photoperiod viewing.

A little progress: cycling the 10g quarantine as well as the 90g main tank.

Co2 system checked out and firmware underway for homebrew controller.

That's a shot of the QT with a shrimp for ammonia. QT is down now. Focus has been on the 90g.

That's a lot of pressure on 1 filter. I bet if you got a power head or external pump you could get a lot more flow out of the eheim and also get the added stress off the pump motor. I was thinking about making a U-tube type thing to fit over the outflow on the powerhead and then out of the tank, to the reactor/heater then back in.. but I now have 2 filters on the 75G... plenty of flow... I did a lot of testing on the Eheim 2078. The Hydor drops flow by 9%. The reactor and associated twists and turns another 8% or so. Eheim rates the 2078 at 1100l/h or about 250gph flat out when loaded with the standard Eheim media set. I confirmed that with a simple over the top test at 1050l/h. Not much upside if everything is removed. Lots of flow test detail on the blog.

The 1260 is rated at 600gph and will be added to a secondary parallel circuit. Flow *will* happen without stuff in tank.

I'm hoping to get some stauro or the eleocharis belem to cover most of the substrate.

Thanks to all for the feedback. I'm going to let this tank mature for a bit before doing much else to it. There is bolbitis, crypt beckettii and h. pinnatifida hiding behind all that wood that should eventually rear their heads. I'm going to paint the drain screen black and try to get the air from between the glass and substrate in the meantime.

Today's task is adding the Eheim 1260 and getting the CO2 working.

I got some Staurogyne repens that I got about a week ago. When it starts growing some more, want me to let you know? I'm seeing new leaves already. I also have a few sprigs of dwarf hair grass that's really taking off with the MTS, not sure of the exact species.
