Purchased some Lilly and Aponogeton Bulbs from Wal-mart and placed them in a one gallon jar. The substrate is ADA aqua soil and the lighting is 13 watts of CFL 8" from the bulbs. Trying to add .1 mL of Excel per day. Anyone have any good ideas how to measure out that little? I really have no idea what to expect.

Get a medicine syringe from your local pharmacy. No need for a needle.

You could dilute the Excel. eg, put 1 mL Excel in 9 mL water to get a 1/10 strength Excel solution, and then add 1 mL of that solution to your jar per day.

Since 1 ml of Excel usually consists of approximately 25 drops, I would gently mix in 2 or 3 drops of Excel per gallon. That's how I used to do it before I obtained some calibrated pipettes, and that method worked fine.

I asked Seachem about diluting excel, they advised against it. I like the drop idea. Is a drop always the same size?

Typically a drop is the same size. If you are applying pressure to the bottle you could create a larger drop than normal, but the surface tension of the liquid should be constant, this means the amount of liquid/weight required for the drop to fall should always be the same.

Why are you adding excel? The bulbs haven't even grown yet.
This doesn't make any sense. Wait till you see some green.

Pull out any fuzzy looking ones.

It can take a while for them to start growing.

Your right about it not helping it grow. However I thought it may help keep the algae in check without a filter and no green yet. So when they turn white fuzzy, just toss them? And how long do they take to start growing. I have read lots of mixed results with these bulbs.

Do you have another tank? Throw them in there and watch them for a couple of weeks, up to about 3. If they get squishy and smell like dank zombie junk, toss 'em out. If they start to sprout and get rooty, toss 'em in your jar. Next time you buy bulbs give them a squeeze through the plastic. You want them to be hard/firm to the touch like a good onion or potato. Would you buy a mushy root vegetable?

Funny that they advised you against it even though they told me on the APC forum that a 50% diluted mix is fine and to simply dose twice as much to achieve regular results. (i was mixing ferts and water and accidentally added water to my bottle of excel )

Wonder what the right answer is.

Excel is simply diluted Glutaraldehyde. Lots of us, including myself, use Metricide or Cidex both of which are also diluted Glutaraldehyde, just stronger and cheaper than Excel. Diluting Excel even more than it already is would be pointless. You need to get yourself some disposable graduated pipettes or some sort of medicine syringe from your local pharmacy. These will allow you to dose in the desired amounts. I have a 2.5 g that I dose 20-25 drops of Metricide in daily using the disposable pipettes. Diluting Excel seems like a complete waste of time. I know we have members on here who buy pure Glutaraldehyde and use it by diluting it to their needs.

Don't you think using 0.2mL vs. 0.1mL daily might be hard on a guys budget?

I placed a link on the first post because I did not know how to post a picture. Would someone tell me how?
