I'm probably a week or two from actually setting this aquarium up, but I wanted to get my journal started. Here is a pic of my old 30g tank. The plan there was... well... there was no plan. Throw some fish, C02, lights, and plants together and see what happens. No way to learn except by doing!
old 30 gallon tank ~ February, 2010
Over time, I came to see how restrictive a 12" width tank can be, therefore I took that tank down in anticipation of setting up a 40 breeder. I keep oogling the 120g at my LFS, but that will have to wait till I own a house.
Note for other newbies out there: If you are thinking about getting an aquarium, get one that is 18"+ front-to-back. Anything less is just awful for aquascaping imho. I learned that the hard way!

2x EMT conduit 1/2"
As you can see, I'm planning to set up a hanger for my lights. Pics to come.
I decided to go Low-Light, High-Tech on this tank to cut down on work and make the tank easier to balance. The lights will be hung well above the water. Perhaps 30"+ above the substrate in total. I will have to experiment to keep things around 40 PAR or so. My design will be in nature aquarium style now that I know what I'm doing. I decided to stick with a very limited number of plant species.

I know this isn't too exciting yet, but pictures will be forthcoming - probably next week. Right now I'm too busy with my day job and studying 3-4 hours a night for exams to get rolling. Hopefully this journal will help motivate me.
