30 July 2010

I'm probably a week or two from actually setting this aquarium up, but I wanted to get my journal started. Here is a pic of my old 30g tank. The plan there was... well... there was no plan. Throw some fish, C02, lights, and plants together and see what happens. No way to learn except by doing!

old 30 gallon tank ~ February, 2010

Over time, I came to see how restrictive a 12" width tank can be, therefore I took that tank down in anticipation of setting up a 40 breeder. I keep oogling the 120g at my LFS, but that will have to wait till I own a house.

Note for other newbies out there: If you are thinking about getting an aquarium, get one that is 18"+ front-to-back. Anything less is just awful for aquascaping imho. I learned that the hard way!

Eheim Classic 2217
5lb Pressurized C02 with Japanese reg
Hagen Mini Elite Diffuser
2x39w T5HO

2x EMT conduit 1/2"
various hardware
pipe bender

As you can see, I'm planning to set up a hanger for my lights. Pics to come.

I decided to go Low-Light, High-Tech on this tank to cut down on work and make the tank easier to balance. The lights will be hung well above the water. Perhaps 30"+ above the substrate in total. I will have to experiment to keep things around 40 PAR or so. My design will be in nature aquarium style now that I know what I'm doing. I decided to stick with a very limited number of plant species.

Bolbitis heudelotii
Anubias barteri v. 'nana'
Anubias barteri 'broadleaf'
Microsporum pteropus v. 'narrow'

Pool Filter Sand
Stone of some sort

I know this isn't too exciting yet, but pictures will be forthcoming - probably next week. Right now I'm too busy with my day job and studying 3-4 hours a night for exams to get rolling. Hopefully this journal will help motivate me.

If it's half as nice as your 30 it will be amazing! Looking forward to pics!

Any plans for Fauna?

I'm not much of a planner myself. I buy things and throw them together as I get them with only a vague idea of what I want....it's worked well for me so far!!

Well, starting to get in plants now. I also pretty much have everything together for the actual setup. Just waiting now on some hardscape stuff.

I also decided to pick up a Hydor Koralia 1 to help with flow. I know Bolbitis love good water movement - that plus the 2217 should be enough.

I got in some plants and put them in my old 30 which is acting as the holding tank for my apistos and plants right now. Still growing a huge mass of stargrass and a few e. tenellus in there to prevent algae. Those won't be going into the new tank.

Ewww... minerals from my semi-hard water.

My girlfriend of 6 years (yeah, I know) told me that if I tried to build another stand in our apartment I'd be sleeping on the futon for a month, so I bought this.

Painted the back black. Gunnar is pleased that I decided to go with a color that matches his coat.

The business end of the setup
