I'm in the process of setting up a tank with higher light and pressurized CO2. I've read a few EI dosing threads, and they're all focused on using dry ferts/making a liquid solution with dry ferts. I live in Canada and potassium nitrate is a controlled chemical. My only means of buying it is through online vendors and they require a copy of my ID....not comfortable giving them that.
Has anyone done EI with Seachems line of flourish products? They have nitrogen, potassium, phosphorous and a trace solution. How much would I need to dose to follow EI? My tank is 32 gallons. I don't want an excessive amount of growth because I don't want to be doing endless maintenance.
Yes they require ID to get the kno3 but they are very respected, I personally would have no issue giving them a copy of my ID.
You can dose EI using Seachem but its going to get very expensive. For example to get EI levels of N you would need to dose 13ml nitrogen 3x per week, and for seachem phosphorus you would need to dose 39ml 3x per week.
The plant guy in Winnipeg is where I order all my stuff from... Plants, Ferts. He's very reputable and that copy of your liscence will be in good hands.
The amount of seachem products you'd have to dose to get the effect of EI, is not worth the money.

Yes so you would add those quantities of dry Ferts to 500ml of RO water, then every second day you would add your macros in 10 ml amounts, same with micros. I wouldn't add your micros to your macros bottle, I would do those in a separate bottle. So 3x a week macro, 3x a week micro, alternating days.
Bump: Basically all this does is makes it so you don't have to mix up a batch every day. Youre looking at 50+ doses out of one mixed bottle. All you have to do is measure out that liquid every time it's time to dose.
I would add 10ml Excel to your micros bottle and refrigerate. I heard it tends to mold.
Oh ok. Thank you. How the hell do you stay on top of that if you're at work? Is there a way of doing that without spending tons of money on an auto doser?
Bottle #2 micro bottle:
Add
Plantex CSM+B 42.028 gm (approximately 9 3/4
Fill to 500ml mark.
Adding 10-15ml of excel to the micro bottle will help with molding issues, but when you do this there is no need to refrigerate.
Dosing would be 10ml per 29g 3x per week on alternating days. For example, dose micros MWF and macros Tu,Th,Sat, they a 50% water change is suggested on the 7th days.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Bump:
Once you have it mixed, it takes less than 10 seconds a day to dose the tank. If you arent home every day that might make it difficult, but in that case having a high tech tank might not be the best idea.
I'm home daily, but I wasn't super clear there. Does it matter at what point in the photoperiod cycle that you dose the fertilizers? The photoperiod on my current tank is roughly 1pm to 9pm. I put excel in the tank before I leave for work in the morning (around 8am), but it would be ideal for it to be when the lights come on. Can I do the same for fertilizers?
I assumed that they should be put into the tank when the lights are on, which is why I was thinking I'd need an auto doser. Thinking about it now though that doesn't make sense. CO2 really shouldn't be added until the lights are on, but plants don't "exhale" fertilizers so that issue shouldn't apply.
Awesome. Thank you. You just saved me another $150 on this tank. It adds up quickly when you're buying equipment.
