Hello all

I'm a little confused on all these chemicals and additives. I recently went from a fish only tank(tetras and discus) and started adding a few plants (swords and a val). In the past i've only added Seachems neutral regulator to keep a 7ph and tetras black water extract. Should i be using fertilizers or salts or root tabs?

It is hard to say whether you need fertilizers or not; it really depends on what kind of lighting you have.

In general, adding chemicals such as neutral regulator (to maintain pH) is not required, as fish will adapt to a wide range of pH values. In fact, by adding such chemicals/additives, it can cause wild pH swings, which can be much more stressful for fish.

With sword plant's which are nutrient hog's in my view, and crypt's... No CO2 injection, or supplement's like excel, I would were it me (and it ain't)..use root tab's under each sword/crypt and appropriate dose for your size tank of Flourish Comprehensive by Seachem.(use once a week day after water change).
Root tab's I use are called Osmocote"Pot Shot's" and only need replaced about every three or four month's.

Sorry more info... I have 4x54 T-5 current lite however i only run 2 of them for 8 hours a day. The PH on tap water is 7.4. i will layoff the PH chemicals... What about the black water additive? Im new to live plants, how would i tell if they are in need of fertilizers? I have no objective to adding fertilizers or root tabs. I do not have the money for a CO2 set up right now i would like to learn more before i get that involved.
