Cool shrimp water question

I have never checked my local lake water parameters but am curious as what to expect im thinking of using 5 gallons or so from the lake ... is this legal though? regardless what kind of parameters are lake waters at. california area. does anyone know what the water conditions would be or have they tested lake water themselves. would this be ok for shrimp. which ways it to free...

Why would you want to use 5 gallons of lake water? Not only would the water parameters be unknown (until you measure them), there may be issues with parasites, bacteria, etc.

Well, considering beneficial bacteria are mostly found on surfaces, adding water wouldn't make much difference.
