I have now tested the water from the tap :
KH 196.9 ppm / 11dKH (11 drops)
GH >214.8 ppm / 15dKH (15 drops)
Filter__ 6x turnover external (not yet set up - waiting for part)
Heating__ 300W Fluval internal
Lighting__ 1x 58W T8 6500 with reflector (1.35WPG)
Substrate__ John Innes 3 Soil capped with 2-5mm moler clay
No C02 addition
high planting density
Some eleocharis with some brown fluffy algae on the tips
No fish yet
I boiled about 2/5ths of the water to get the temp right and the rest from the cold tap. The water was dechlorinated using tetra dechlorinator in a seperate bucket before adding to the tank.
I have read on many forums that people don't think that these tests are very accurate, and some even saying to 'throw away' the test kit an rely on observation. Is this a good idea for a beginner like me? Can you tell me what things I should be looking for to understand how my water quality is, and whether there are any problems? I wan't to be prepared to react in case any problems arise.
And lastly can I keep a tropical community tank -barbs,tetra's,rainbows etc etc with these parameters? I was told that 7.0 is ideal, I believe 7.8 is verging towards cichlids etc?
Thanks for your help
