What is going on with my water.

So I don't know what this is. It's all at the top of the water. This is my only tank that has it. I feed frozen fresh water multi pack by sally's I dose seachems trace, flourish and excel. No new plants or hard scape. Substrate is flourite/ eco complete. I did not have this problem untill I switched from a hob to my ehiem 2074.

It looks like a biofilm has developed at the surface of your water. This is normal, but too much of it can disrupt gas exchange between the atmosphere and the water (not to mention it is unsightly).

It can be caused by several things such as the protein from (over)feeding.

Usually things like raising your filter return (to agitate the surface more) will help disrupt the biofilm. Of course, reducing feedings, and manual removal of the biofilm will help as well.

Is the output from the new filter under the surface of the water? If so, that's why. Your HOB likely spilled water across the surface of the water keeping the film broken up. If your new filter output is under the surface, you probably aren't getting the same surface disruption.

Re: What is going on with my water.

So should I get a protein skimmer so I can keep noise down. Also on the over feeding I have 32 neons, 2 3-4" angels 7 German blue rams, 4 humble bee cats, 1 red claw crab, 10 ghost shrimp, 1 assassin snail 4 nerite snails, 4 rabbit snails, 2 skirt tetras 1 sae. I figured 1 cube of food once a day along with a couple pinches of terra color granuals. Once a day was fine.

I'm not too sure of the size of your aquarium, but it could be that your fish are producing a lot of waste, contributing to the organic bioload.

In any case, you can try reducing feedings a little.

There is no need to get a protein skimmer (I doubt it will work in a freshwater system anyway).

You can still raise the filter return tube of your canister filter slightly, such that the surface of the water is rippling. There should not be any noise, so there should be no concern in doing so.

It has been rippling the whole time! It's an ehiem pro 3e I had it on the 12 hour bio load.

Re: What is going on with my water.

Did you put some media from HOB into Eheim? Your BB could be falling behind.

+1 on raising the outflow a bit. Adding some bacteria say, StressZime or such will help also.

If you have a ton of floaters, thin some out to increase surface agitation.

Raising the out flow cleared it up. Looks like ill be rigging up a surface skimmer
