I'm 3 months into my first heavily planted tank and I'm trying to get a grasp on which nutrients I'm lacking. I'm using Hagen test kits for Nitrate, Iron, and Phosphates. I also have an AP master test kit for testing pH, Gh, Kh, and Nitrites. What other test kits would be helpful? I do a 40-50% water change weekly. I tested for Nitrate just before my last change and it came out around 2 to 2.5mg/liter. My understanding is that mg/l is the same as ppm. Is this correct?

Some of my leaves are yellowish and have holes, so I know something is out of wack. I've been dosing 5ml of Tropica Mastergrow per each change and I'm thinking I'll gradually increase the amount to see if the plants start looking better. My crypts look like they're on the verge of melting although there are new leaves coming in- the bad leaves are the older ones.

mg/l = ppm.

Your nitrates are a bit low. Also are you dosing potassium? And what are your phosphate levels?

I'm not dosing potassium straight but it is the first ingredient in TMG at 0.79%. I guess I'll have to get a potassium kit. My phosphate level is at .25 or maybe a tad higher- it looked light blue but more color than the .25 square on the chart.

Potassium test kit-is there such a thing? I've looked at both Big Al's and Drs FosterSmith and haven't found one yet. Also Rex, who makes a fairly reliable Iron test kit? Thanks

They do make Potassium kits, but I think they are kinda useless (from what I have heard). You want around 20ppm of Potassium in your tank. A good source for K is either KCl (what I use) or K2SO4 (Potassium Sulfate). Just dose 20ppm each week after a water change, that seems to be an average rule. For dosing amounts you should use Chuck's Calculator http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_p...osage_calc.htm very helpful, look around the site too.. there is some really great info on ferts and the like. Just make sure your Hagen test kits work before you start dosing things.. I have been dosing mucho amounts of KNO3 because of a faulty NO3 test kit.

Ok so if TMG only has .79% K and I need 20ppm, my 5ml dose is way too low. I'll have to start dosing things separately. What are some ways you can you tell if something is wrong with your test kit?

Mainly when getting unexpected results. Example: You dose KNO3 according to Chucks calc to get a certain ppm, but the kit reads zero or some crazy value. You mix KNO3 in a 5g bucket to dose your tank, and expect 40 ppm, but there is no difference to tap water. Just an example.

Yep, that how I just found out. Man.. lucky I caught it early. I think dosing things individually is the best way to go. You dose K every week, and N and P as you need it, depending on your tests until you get into a routine.
