I have this fixture, the 24" 2 X 24 watt T-5 SLR freshwater

I want to raise the fixture above the tank. There is this- but it's not compatible with my fixture, as mine does not have any holes in it.

I thought, well I could drill holes, but it's just plastic, so that won't work right?
Any ideas on how to raise this fixture?

If I had that fixture I would look it over very carefully to see where it would be safe to drill into the fixture. Watch out for the ballast, if it is inside the housing somewhere. You might be able to drill into the ends or the top of the fixture. Ideally you would partly disassemble the fixture so you could put nuts and washers on the inside of the fixture, and install eye bolts for chains or cables to suspend it by. If you can't use nuts and washers I would use sheet metal type eye bolts and be even more careful when screwing them in, limiting them to the ends of the fixture, not the top.

While it wouldn't be very attractive, you can use a 2 x 4, on edge, cut to the desired height. Just cut a slot in the bottom to fit the tank rim and a slot in the top to fit the fixture ends. Make sure the cut slots are snug so the wood doesn't wobble.

This could also be done with thick acrylic scraps appropriately sized and would be less visible if using clear or black colors.
