As a side to my 72 gal high tech tank I have an older 10 gal that gets maybe 1/8th t. of PPMD dry fert once every week or so, and maybe 1ml of Excel every other day or so, perhaps a capful after a water change. It's got an Eclipse filter/light hood with 2x18W T8's. Sometimes I change the water 20-30% every week, sometimes I go 4-6 weeks with no water change and then do a 50-60% change. Other than a small bit of GBA (green-beard algae, a good kind that looks very nice actually) on a couple of small rocks I have in there, I have not had any algae issues of any kind in probably 2 years. Fish bioload: 1checkboard cichlid, 4 paraguayensis tetras, 1 old, crusty neon tetra (I swear I think he's at least 7 years old now), 1 Cory aeneus, and about 8-10 little Endler's. Oh, and one African Dwarf Frog (who's about 2 years old now). I also have snips and cuttings from my larger 72 gal tank I throw in the 10 gal including some mosses, a few crypts, some H. polysperma 'sunset', a few small Rotalas and some pennywort and some H. difformis. The thing is stable as all heck. I test every once and a while and ammonia is always zilch, though Nitrates and Phosphates are a little high....(shouldn't I have algae because of that???? Oh, well)
So I cannot really answer the poll as I do not do it regularly enough to fall into one category of an answer.
