New to plants...questions on starter setup.

So I think I have decided to start out low tech just to see if I can grow anything. It was recommended in another thread to buy decent lights right off the bat, they recommended t5ho's.

My plan so far:

Setup 10 gallon that I currently own with aquaclear 50 HOB filter.
Substrate: Eco Complete
Lights: Aquasun T5HO from petco (unless people have had bad experiences)
Buy a TON of low light plants.

Question:

Even if only running 1 bulb in a t5ho will have me at (I think) 24 watts which is way over the 1.5 watts per gallon low light requirement. Would this lighting be too high to avoid CO2 and ferts? Possible solution would be to get 15 gallon or even a 20 gallon which I am more then willing to do. I just figured I'd use the 10 gallon because I had it but am totally open to going slightly bigger.

Any help would be appreciated!

You are doing the right thing by heavily planting from the beggining. Check out a Finnex LED instead of the t5 HO, because I'm thinking it may be too much.

Forget the T5HO and use a spiral bulb in a clip light. It will be much easier to grow plants with that light in that tank.

Can you give a link to exact spiral bulb clip light you think would be the one to use?
