Well today I decided to try making a ODNO hood with two 24" 20W 5000K GE Plant bulbs. This is over my 20G Long.
a ballast, Advance REL-4P32-SC for $17.97

For a total of $35 (including tax)

It is so much brighter I put a ton of riccia in there in case the increase in light shocks the fish. It is much brighter, and after several hours of burn in, the bulbs are not any hotter than what the PC bulb was. I can keep my fingers on the bulb for a count of 3.
Now that I've got the lights in order I can think about some plants.
Of course my price does not include the fact I had a bare ABS hood laying around and several sheets of reflector, and misc hardware like screws and wiring nuts.
The bulbs are Philips Natural Sunshine, 5000K, 850 lumens, 92 CRI. Probably not the best, but at $5/each it was worth trying. The color is kind of yellow, but casting through the riccia it has a lot of green to it also.
The end caps are generic Advance bolt on end caps, at the Home Depot I was at they had them right with the ballasts.
Here is a pic of the underside of the hood, the ballast is just attached to the rear of the hood; with it on the tank you can't really tell and the wiring isn't that bad looking. I am going to put black conduit over it tomorrow. With a larger hood I could have hid the wiring better.
I used the wiring diagram on this site, except instead of using a single 48" bulb I wired the two 24" bulbs in series and wired the ballast like I was wiring a single 48" bulb. I'm unsure if this is still 2X overdriven or 4X though.

I'm not sure, but I think you can do the same with 30W bulbs, or you can run two bulbs in parallel and overdrive each one seperately.
Nice before and after pictures. Glad to see ODNO worked out for another planted tank hobbyist. I'm glad to also hear they aren't excessively hot, either. I would still consider adding a cooling fan to help extend the life of the bulbs.

How would the wiring diagram look if I wanted to overdrive by 2x?
There would be two options. If you keep the two bulbs in series like Desolas did, you'd just connect two of the four (2 red, 2 blue) to the bulbs. It doesn't matter to which pin you connect them, but it is recommended to bridge the two pins on each side.
Or, if you would connect the bulbs parallel, two reds would go to one bulb, and two blues to the other. On the opposite side, 1 yellow would be connected to each bulb.
By connecting two bulbs in series like done here, the ballast "thinks" it is a longer bulb, and provides more current. Need to be careful though... the ballast here is only for up to 48" bulbs, so two 24" bulbs are the maximum. If you would put 2 36" bulbs in series, the ballast would be overheating (I think).
