I have a 55 gal tank that I recently puchased. It's completely empty right now because I'm trying to do my homework first. I don't know anything about lighting but I don't think I want a heavily planted tank. I like seeing the substate and having rocks or driftwood around for fish to hide. I have to by a hood for the tank, but I need to sort out the lighting issue before I purchase it.

All suggestions will be helpful.

There are many options for 48" long tanks. You can save money by doing a DIY hood, and using 4 feet long T8's or T12's in it. If DIY isn't your thing, and you have some cash, you could go with any 110W 48" PC fixture, there are quite a few models to choose from. Another option would be to use shoplights, but one (80W) would be very very low light for anything but the most undemanding plants, and two of them (160W) would be quite a bit of light, requiring more maintenance.

Thanks.....DIY isn't my thing, at least for right now. I've tried searching the web for a hood and lighting system but I always get directed to All-Glass or Perfecto for the hoods. If I search for lighting, I get lighting kits that need me to provide my own hood. Any suggestions on hood/lighting that I can purchase? Brands? Websites?

There are many, and somebody else can probably give you better info on them, since I diy all my hoods. But here is one possible option http://www.hellolights.com/482xcofraq2x.html

You could Checkout Aquaones web site, they make canopies and so to do aquamedic.
