Thumbs down Little confused on light levels.......newb

Hello, everyone.

I have found the planted tank forums very helpful but still unsure of some things when it comes to lighting levels in any given situation.

I am in the process of planning a (hopefully) fairly heavily planted tank. I am planning to place an Aquaticlife t5 ho 2 lamp 2x54 lighting fixture over a standard 55 gallon tank. I plan to use one 6000k bulb and a 6700k bulb.

Now, from a bunch of reading here in these forums and elsewhere I am not sure what light levels this will give me. Some will say low to medium and others say that this is high light. Originally I was planning to buy two of these fixtures but recently I decided to start with one and go from there.

So, what level should I expect from the single fixture set up? Should I plan to grow high light plants and plan for a pressurized co2 setup or will a single t5 108 watt fixture keep me in the lower light arena. Would two of these fixtures (216 watts) ever be useful or just overkill?

Thank you for any information you all can provide.

That particular fixture has strong ballasts and very good reflectors, it should be more than plenty on a 55g. Use that light, provide your tank with ample ferts and co2 and you will be a happy man. Don't get all caught up in PAR numbers and lighting levels, for the most part it's mostly unnecessarily academic blabble.

So can I expect to be able to grow high light carpeting type plants such as dwarf hairgrass with this amount of light?

I wouldn't call DHG a "high-light" carpeting plant.

That light should grow anything you want provided you are supplying ample ferts and co2.

Thank you for the information and help.

On CO2. Is a co2 reactor placed in the return line of a canister filter the most efficient way to get co2 into the water?

Yep, Rex or Cerges reactors work very well.
