5000K bulbs should work fine, but you may not like the yellowish color they produce.

Re: 5000k?

They grow plants just fine, I got them on my low tech 10g and the color is acceptable to my eye. I believe 6500K screw-in cfl are harder to find and are more $$.

Home Depot has the screw in 6500 in 4 packs for under $10.00
They call them bright white or daylight. Can't remember which. Just look at the display they usually have set up. It's the last bulb on the right.

You need to look at the brand also. Different manufacturers call 6500K different things. Daylight in a Sylvania is 6500K, in a Utilitech (Lowes store brand) it appears they call 5000K daylight. Got to love the uniformity.

I just got a pack, 4 pcs of screw in cfl bulb last night for $8 at Vons grocery. HD also sells the same. I think 6500k is the most you can find.
