Ray2 24" or Ray2 30"?

Tank dimensions 32.25" x 14" x 16" rimless. Now Ray2 24" or Ray2 30" have the same amount of light, but it is more spread out on the 30" version.

I am doing a low tech tank so if I raise it 8" above the tank at a total height of 24" the par is at 26 touching the bottom of the tank.

I dont want wasted light or have excess light flooding out the side of the tank so I am wondering if 24" is more ideal as it will spread out light being raised 8". What do you think? ---- Benefit of the 30" is I could put right above tank if I ever wanted to go with medium tech. Regardless I will be dosing Excel.

30" raised 8" above tank wont make excess light beaming out to sides?

The 30 & the the 24 are identical except for the length of the housing.

This is correct. The LED strips are identical. There will not be any difference in the lighting between the 24" and the 30".

I know my 24" ray 2, while sitting on the top of my 72" tank (24" above substrate) lights at least 3/4 of the length of the tank. If I remember I'll measure tonight.

I placed my 24" finnex ray 2 on the top of my 72" aquarium, shut off all other lights, and took some measurements:

LED height over substrate: 22"
Length of LED strip on fixture: 22.5"
Length of substrate in tank lit up: 54"

16" above substrate would give you a lit length of about 45.5"

You might be able to get away with an 18" version.
The 16" version only has an LED strip that is 10.5" in length.

Does that mean the lights are spread out more on the 30" version or the lights exactly in the same spot...

The LED strips are identical. The only difference is the length of the housing.
The 24" version has a 22.5" LED strip mounted in a 24" housing.
The 30" version has a 22.5" LED strip mounted in a 30" housing.

Hey Soup12,

Sorry this is a bit out of the topic but, may I ask you where you found your rimless tank? I would very much like a tank like yours, in your dimensions too as well!

Thanks in advance for the info!

This is an extremely rare dimension tank, I am leaning towards it was a custom glass tank costing $$$. My buddy gave it to me before he moved and said he got as a gift and said it was pricey.

I will have pics up as I create my build!
