New to planted tank. wattage question.

Hello. I just got a new light fixture. A power compact coralife 48 4x 65W.
Two bulbs are 10000K daylight and two are true actinic blue.
I read Rex's page on lighting. My question is: If I replace these bulbs with something more suitable for a planted tank, could I buy bulbs with more wattage?
Like 96W bulbs. Just wondering if the ballast is only rated for a certain wattage.
Thanks.

You might be able to get away with it. But chances are the ballast won't drive the higher wattage bulbs. Also since 96 watt bulbs are 34" long it might be hard to fit them in there.

What size tank? 4x65w is plenty for even a 75gallon...hell even a 90 gal would still be at 2.8wpg, but you'd have dark areas, or a lack of penetration to the substrate if it's a 90 tall.

Otherwise, no the Coralife ballast won't drive a 2x96 and 2x65 at the same time, and no way will you get a 96w to fit properly in there.

Thanks for the information guys. Now I know the bulbs are different lengths too.

Malkore: My tank is a 72 gallon All Glass bowfront. I guess there's plenty of light. The water was looking pretty green when I got home from work. lol
I'll hold onto these bulbs. I read you change them in 9 months to a year. I'll put in 6700K bulbs at that time.

Rex: You're Planted Tank Guide is excellent. Had to add it to my bookmarks.

I tried running mine til they died, but after 2 years they were dim and the plants weren't doing so great.
I'd change after 2 years of 12 hour daily use, but certainly you can run them longer than 9 months. 9-12 months is for NO tubes, not PC's.

I measured my 3 year old 55w bulb's light output, not much difference from a 6 month's old one, or a new one.

Truvu 100g Flourite, wet/dry, AHSupply 302w PC, PinPoint controller
10gallon15w T6+15w T8
55gallon40w T6 ODNO4x, no CO2. Discus grow out.
10gallon Tonina tank, 2x15w T6 ODNO 4x
---------------------
I will do aquascapes after I collect all the plant species and grow them to perfection.
