need your opinions on LED light -help me choose

The LED guy is asking for help deciding on the next light. I've weighed out the pro-cons here and I need your help in making my decision. This light will be over my ADA 60H which is 24Lx12Dx18H

AquaIllumination Sol Blue
Pro: I already have it. Controllability, controller allows me to do things like, sunrise, sunset, lightning storms, moonlight cycles etc.

Con: It's a reef light, so it only has 8 white LEDs and they're cool white xp-g's so they may not have the right spectrum in the red range. I'm worried 8 LEDs won't be enough light. The remaining LEDs are blue so they won't work too well on a planted tank.

Kessil Amazon Sun 6500k
Pro: Nice looking, hangable - will make or buy a light stand. Good coloration and spectrum for plants. Not super super expensive ~260-270ish

Cons: Not dimmable, no other features other than a light, single point light source so may have a hot spot in the middle, hanging it so the spread is enough to cover the tank may reduce the light levels to below what I need.

Finnex RayII LED
Pro: Cheap, <100 bucks. Good spread, perfect PAR

Cons: Not dimmable, can't hang it, will have to use legs over the tank. If I do hang it, the light level will drop significantly.

PAR38's from RapidLED
Pro: Cheap - two will be sufficient to cover the tank. Nice PAR, nice color, good spectrums.

Cons: Ugly, not dimmable, won't be able to mount it as nicely as I did at home since I can't drill into the wall. Not a huge fan of that ikea set up where you put sunshades over it.

Custom built LED
Pro: Built just the way I like it, spectrum, color, etc. Will be hangable, will be able to make it look nice (thank's to my dad), dimmable, custom color mixing.

Cons: For the way I want it configured, it'll be $$$, I'm looking at well north of 300.

As of now, I'm leaning towards just building a custom one but obviously I'd like to save what money I can. I can sell my AI too so it'll cover the cost of my next light.

Help me choose!!

If you are really good at soldering, you can change out the blue LEDs in your sol for what ever colors you want. That's what I'd do. That or just make a nice pendant.

Edit- I think you can order white pods for the sol too. I would see how much they are. Maybe even put a wtb on nano-reef or something.

yowza, it'd cost $200 to change out the sol blue's pucks for whites. I think I'm going to sell and custom build a fixture

You can hang the Finnex Ray 2. See my post here:

Conduit Light Hanger for Finnex Ray 2

Pretty easy to do and could be improved greatly depending on the time and thought put into it. I have some ideas of my own to improve the looks and functionality. I raised mine an additional 3.5" over my 20H and it's working out great.

Love the Ray 2, BTW.

Unfortunately, they are not. I read that they're looking into dimmable fixtures, but this one doesn't allow it.

Have you looked at TrueLumen Pro LED's? They are dimmable and come in 8000k for planted tanks. Based on Hoppy's chart they also provide pretty good par. I think ADG also uses them to light some tanks in their store so Frank might be able to give you an opinion on them.

If the spectral graph on currentusas website is true for the 8000k they're almost useless. Not to mention only 9.1 watts for the smallest fixture, you can get that with 2 XML

I went ahead and just bought a DIY kit from ledgroupbuy using the makersled heatsinks.

Going to run 12 neutral white cree xt-e and 12 royal blue cree xt-e, both dimmable. The white's will provide the majority of the light and the right spectrum and the blue's will be to adjust the color to a 7000k look.

Look for the build thread soon!

Hey bro, how about doing 75% CW and 25% WW so that you get the blues and reds/oranges? That's the setup i'm planning on building.
