DIY Light Hood

When I bought my 55 gallon tank, it came with two seperate hoods that each could only hold a 15 watt bulb. Now if you read the lighting section you will know that this is not enough. So one day I decided it was time to build my own hood. Now that I did I am very, very happy.

Construction of the box was pretty simple. You just have to get the measurements spot on otherwise you may have some problems. Once I made the box, it was a simple matter of screwing the two shop light fixtures into the box. Ventilation slits were then made on top to make sure the heat could escape!

Enough wood to make box: $20-30
Two shop light fixtures:        $15-20
Four bulbs :                         $20-35
Hinges for door:                   $5
Stain:                                   $10-15
Total Cost:                           $65-105

Now that may seem expensive to you but compared to buying from somewhere it would save you alot of money. It did take me a whole afternoon but it was fun and gave me something to do over the weekend. So if you have the time and are in the need of more light, why not give it a try??
